Urgent Meeting Called by Netanyahu to Address Hostage Release Strategy

Hamas rejects proposals as Israel intensifies efforts for captives' release.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened an urgent meeting at the Israel Defense Forces headquarters in Tel Aviv to address the ongoing hostage crisis in Gaza. The meeting on Sunday evening came after Hamas rejected all existing proposals for the captives’ release, according to Israeli security officials.

Hamas continues to demand an end to Israeli military operations in Gaza and a full withdrawal of troops conditions Israel refuses to meet as it combats the terrorist organization responsible for the October 7 massacre that left over 1,400 Israelis dead.

Mossad chief David Barnea was slated to present a new strategy to senior ministers and security officials at the meeting, including Defense Minister Israel Katz and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer. Katz emphasized that the return of the hostages remains Israel’s top priority.

“From my first day in this role, I’ve defined the hostages’ return as our most important value goal,” Katz said. “There have never been, and never will be, political considerations on this matter.”

The Israeli government, in coordination with families of the hostages, continues to push for their safe return. Katz reiterated his commitment to the families, stating that their stories strengthen his resolve to explore every possible avenue to bring their loved ones home.

Meanwhile, developments in Hamas’s leadership structure could impact ongoing negotiations. Reports indicate that senior Hamas officials have recently moved from Qatar to Turkey. The relocation, confirmed by Israeli intelligence sources, could alter the dynamics of ceasefire talks mediated by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt.

Hostage families have also been active in international diplomacy, recently meeting with outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden and other senior officials. The families urged Biden to collaborate with President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team to ensure bipartisan efforts for the captives' release. Biden affirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to bringing the hostages home, according to a White House statement.

In parallel, Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) released a proof-of-life video of hostage Alexander “Sasha” Troufanov, a dual Russian-Israeli citizen abducted during the October 7 attack. The video, reportedly recorded in recent days, marks the third time PIJ has issued footage of Troufanov, with earlier videos released in May.

As tensions remain high and negotiations hang in the balance, Israel’s government and defense establishment are determined to secure the release of its citizens held captive by Hamas, while continuing their broader mission to dismantle the terror group.
