Netanyahu and Germany’s Merz Hold 'Friendly' Talk on Middle East

German chancellor reaffirms ties with Israel amid deepening defense cooperation and Gaza ceasefire discussions.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held a “good and friendly” conversation on Sunday, focusing on political developments and regional issues in the Middle East, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.

The call comes at a pivotal time in Israel-Germany relations, as both nations navigate ongoing tensions in Gaza and increasing cooperation in the defense sector.

Merz, leader of Germany’s center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), recently acknowledged Israel’s crucial role in regional security. According to a report in the Telegraph, when asked about the Israel-Iran conflict during the G7 summit in June, Merz remarked that “Israel is doing the dirty work for all of us.” The comment was reportedly well received by German lawmakers who have expressed concern over their country’s growing reliance on Israeli defense technology.

Senior Israeli defense officials responded positively, saying Israel is “proud” to contribute meaningfully to Germany’s rearmament efforts. The strategic defense relationship between the two nations has grown significantly in recent years, with Israel emerging as a key supplier and advisor on advanced military systems.

Sunday’s call is the second publicly confirmed conversation between the two leaders in recent months. In an earlier phone call in October, Merz voiced strong support for former U.S. President Donald Trump’s ceasefire proposal in Gaza. At the time, a German government spokesperson stated that Merz believed the plan offered “the best chance for peace for the hostages and peace for Gaza.”

Germany’s partnership with Israel remains anchored not only in shared democratic values but also in mutual security interests. As Europe grapples with rising antisemitism and geopolitical instability, Germany has continued to voice strong support for Israel’s right to self-defense.

Netanyahu’s diplomatic engagement with Merz reflects a broader strategy to deepen ties with key allies and ensure sustained backing on critical security matters. At a time when some European voices waver, Germany’s steady alignment signals an enduring alliance built on trust, technology, and shared truth.
