Netanyahu Rejects State Inquiry Into October 7 Massacre

Bereaved families turn their backs as Prime Minister declines proposed commission of inquiry.

In the halls of the Knesset on Monday, the prime minister’s refusal to endorse an independent state commission of inquiry into the deadly October 7 attacks triggered a powerful protest from mourning families. The atmosphere was charged as members of the October Council representing victims’ families turned their backs to the speaker in visible defiance.

Netanyahu told lawmakers that the key question was not “only what we investigate, but who investigates the truth.” He insisted that any commission must command “the broadest possible public trust,” rejecting one he said would be “half the nation rejects or believes is pre‑written.” He appealed for a model similar to that used after the 9/11 attacks in the United States.

The bereaved families sat in the gallery, some holding photographs of their lost loved ones. After Netanyahu delayed addressing the inquiry issue for the first twenty minutes of his speech, the silence in their section turned into a solemn protest.

Opposition leaders sharply criticised Netanyahu’s stance. Yair Lapid said: “Under your watch, no one takes responsibility. No one says ‘I’m sorry.’” He declared that leadership positions held on October 7 cannot escape the burden of accountability.

Despite broad public support for a full state inquiry, Netanyahu and his coalition have repeatedly blocked its formation. Many observers say the government is seeking to delay or dilute the investigation’s powers.

For the bereaved families, the rejection was a painful blow. The motion they support would have the power to subpoena witnesses, issue personal findings and investigate the highest levels of leadership. Instead, the prime minister’s comments suggested a narrower and less controversial mechanism.

As the war in Gaza continues and national wounds remain fresh, the question of how Israel examines its own failures looms large. The call for truth resonates not only for the families, but for every citizen who demands transparency and accountability in moments of national trauma.
