Netanyahu Plans Washington Visit to Meet Trump
First foreign leader to meet Trump in his second term amid critical US-Israel cooperation.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is preparing for a significant visit to Washington next week, where he is expected to meet U.S. President Donald Trump. If finalized, the meeting would mark Netanyahu as the first foreign leader to visit Trump during his second term in office.
The visit, tentatively scheduled from Sunday to Wednesday, depends on Netanyahu’s recovery from recent prostate surgery. While no formal invitation has been issued, Trump confirmed the possibility of an upcoming meeting, stating aboard Air Force One that Netanyahu would be in Washington “in the not-so-distant future.”
The trip highlights the deep bond between the two leaders, further cemented by Netanyahu’s agreement to a U.S.-brokered ceasefire in Gaza, including the release of hostages. It also comes as Yechiel Leiter begins his tenure as Israel’s new ambassador to the United States, emphasizing the strategic partnership between the two nations.
“The relationship between Israel and the United States is built on shared values and decades of cooperation,” Leiter stated. “I am committed to strengthening this unique relationship and enhancing regional stability.”
Leiter, who replaces Michael Herzog, brings a long history of political and diplomatic service. Born in Pennsylvania, he moved to Israel in 1978 and has held key positions, including as an adviser to former prime ministers and Netanyahu himself. Leiter’s leadership comes at a pivotal time, with ongoing efforts to defeat Hamas and address regional threats from Iran.
Leiter expressed gratitude for Netanyahu’s leadership, describing him as “navigating the ship of our nation through turbulent days” and praised Trump as “a true friend of Israel and the Jewish people.” He pledged to work across bipartisan lines to maintain Israel as a unifying issue in U.S. politics, despite challenges stemming from his strong support for Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
As Trump’s special Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, arrives in Israel this week for talks, the focus remains on strengthening security ties and addressing critical regional concerns.
Netanyahu’s anticipated meeting with Trump will reaffirm the robust partnership between the U.S. and Israel, as the two leaders discuss pressing issues, including the ongoing conflict with Hamas and the growing Iranian threat.
