Jewish and Pro-Israel Groups Mourn Passing of Congresswoman Nita Lowey

Trailblazing lawmaker remembered as a steadfast champion of Israel and the Jewish people.

Jewish and pro-Israel communities across the United States are mourning the loss of former Congresswoman Nita Lowey, a long-time advocate for Israel and Jewish causes. Lowey, who passed away at age 87 after battling breast cancer, leaves behind a remarkable legacy of leadership, dedication, and unwavering support for the US-Israel relationship.

Lowey's family, in their statement, highlighted her commitment to the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam repairing the world a principle that guided her decades-long career in public service.

The American Jewish Committee (AJC) honored Lowey as “an irreplaceable champion of the Jewish people” and praised her role as a mentor and standard-bearer for the US-Israel alliance. AJC CEO Ted Deutch reflected on her historic tenure as the first woman to chair the influential House Appropriations Committee, noting how she used her leadership to combat antisemitism and foster bipartisan support for Israel. “Her legacy lives on through her colleagues, the legislation she championed, and the countless lives she uplifted,” Deutch said.

Democratic Majority For Israel (DMFI) echoed these sentiments. Mark Mellman, DMFI President and CEO, described Lowey as “a trailblazer, a devoted public servant and a champion of the US-Israel relationship.” He emphasized her instrumental role in passing over 400 pieces of legislation, including the significant Nita M. Lowey Middle East Partnership for Peace Act. This groundbreaking law fosters economic cooperation between Israelis and Palestinians and continues to strengthen the region’s prospects for peace.

Stephanie Hausner, chief operating officer of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations and a former intern for Lowey, underscored the congresswoman’s unparalleled commitment to Israel. “She is one of the strongest champions we’ve ever seen in Congress in terms of support for Israel,” Hausner remarked. “Her shoes I don’t know that they’ll ever fully be filled.”

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) also paid tribute, calling Lowey “a dear friend and stalwart ally of the pro-Israel community.” AIPAC highlighted her tireless advocacy for ensuring Israel had the resources necessary for its defense and praised her leadership in promoting regional reconciliation through her peacebuilding initiatives.

As Jewish and pro-Israel organizations reflect on her passing, Nita Lowey’s lifelong dedication to strengthening Israel and uplifting the Jewish people continues to serve as an enduring inspiration.
