Israeli Cycling Team Rallies with October 7 Survivors in Florence

Israeli Cyclists and Survivors Unite for the Tour de France

Two survivors of the Hamas massacre on October 7th departed from Tel Aviv for Italy to join the Israeli team competing in the 111th edition of the Tour de France. The Israel-Premier Tech (IPT) team is making its fifth appearance in the world’s most prestigious cycling race. This year’s 2,174-mile, 21-stage event starts in Florence on June 29 and concludes in Nice on July 21.

The survivors, Avida Bachar and Sharon Shevo from Kibbutz Be’eri, joined the team to highlight the resilience and unity of the Israeli community. Bachar, who lost his son, wife, and one of his legs during the attack, and Shevo, who was wounded while cycling, will participate in the race's opening events and commemorations.

“At a time when we are in a difficult battle, it is of great importance for us to participate in the biggest race in the world with ‘Israel’ emblazoned on our uniforms,” said IPT co-owner Sylvan Adams. The team, featuring riders from various countries, including Germany, Canada, Denmark, Latvia, and Britain, is set to make a significant impact in the race.

IPT CEO Ido Shavit emphasized the importance of representing Israel on such a global stage, especially during challenging times. “We started 10 years ago as a small team. We’ve had our best season ever,” he said. IPT has recorded 16 stage victories across all competitions.

Ron Baron, the founder of IPT, highlighted the tragic impact of the October 7 attack on the cycling community in Be’eri. “Many of them got killed, kidnapped, injured. Am Yisrael is a big family. We help each other,” he said.

During their stay in Florence, Bachar and Shevo will join training sessions and participate in several commemorations held by the Jewish community. They will also address the Italian crowd at the annual Balagan Cafe cultural festival.

The Israeli team will honor Gino Bartali, a two-time Tour de France winner recognized by Yad Vashem for saving Jews during the Holocaust. “Biking is part of my life. Although I practice mountain biking, there’s no doubt that the Tour de France is an amazing athletic experience,” said Bachar.

Bachar and Shevo’s participation symbolizes the strength and perseverance of those affected by the attacks. Bachar continues to cope with his loss and works on regaining independence. Shevo, despite his injuries, remains passionate about cycling.

Earlier this week, Sylvan Adams presented Israeli President Isaac Herzog with an official IPT jersey for the Tour de France. Herzog praised Adams for his leadership and efforts in showcasing the positive side of Israel. “You’re showing the world the beautiful face of Israel on and off the track,” Herzog said.

Adams has been a prominent figure in promoting Israel through sports and cultural events. He has organized significant events, such as bringing Lionel Messi to Israel, and has made substantial donations to Israeli institutions, including a $100 million donation to Ben-Gurion University.

The Tour de France, set against the backdrop of global sports diplomacy, serves as a platform to promote Israel’s resilience and unity. The participation of Bachar and Shevo in this prestigious event underscores the strength of the human spirit and the solidarity of the Israeli people.
