U.S. and Israeli Leaders Mourn Return of Omer Neutra’s Remains

After two years in Hamas captivity, Israeli-American lone soldier to be buried in dignity and honor.

The long-awaited return of Omer Neutra, a 21-year-old Israeli-American lone soldier murdered by Hamas on October 7, 2023, brought a measure of closure this week to his grieving family and to the many who have advocated tirelessly on his behalf. Neutra's remains, held by Hamas for over two years, were finally returned to Israel along with those of Asaf Hamami and Oz Daniel.

The news triggered an emotional response from American and Israeli officials, as well as Jewish organizations around the world, who reflected not only on the loss but on the courage and dedication Omer represented.

“Omer’s death is tragic,” said U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, “but his life is a testament to the resolve of the Jewish people.” Rubio added that Neutra’s legacy must never be forgotten, and that his sacrifice was made in the name of peace and protection.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul highlighted the unwavering efforts of Omer’s loved ones, writing, “Omer’s body has finally been returned for proper burial.” Born and raised in Long Island, N.Y., Neutra chose to serve in the IDF, embodying the values of commitment, identity, and shared destiny.

Sen. Chuck Schumer, who has stood closely with the Neutra family, called the past two years “anguishing,” adding, “Finally, Omer can be laid to rest in proper burial.” He also renewed calls for Hamas to return the remaining eight bodies still held, including that of Itay Chen, another American-Israeli from New York.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand echoed these sentiments, expressing both sorrow and relief: “While this is not the outcome any of us hoped for, I am relieved that Omer’s body has finally been returned to Israel.”

Ofir Akunis, Israel’s consul general in New York, shared that he had the privilege of getting to know Omer’s parents, Ronen and Orna, describing their strength and perseverance as inspirational. “The Israeli government will not rest until all hostages are returned,” Akunis affirmed.

Ted Deutch, CEO of the American Jewish Committee, stated, “The Neutra family has been unwavering in their advocacy for Omer and for all of the hostages. They deserve closure, and now they’ll finally have that.”

The Jewish Federations of North America honored Neutra as a “courageous warrior” and expressed solidarity with the families of four other hostages whose remains were also returned in recent days.

Omer Neutra’s story is one of loyalty, courage, and an unbreakable bond between Israel and the global Jewish people. A proud American and proud Israeli, he represents the spirit of thousands who choose to stand guard over the Jewish state not out of obligation, but out of love.
