Netanyahu praises Paraguay’s president for rejecting ICC arrest warrants

Santiago Peña reaffirms support for Israel, announces embassy move to Jerusalem.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lauded Paraguayan President Santiago Peña during his visit to Jerusalem on Wednesday for rejecting International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrants issued against Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. The Paraguayan leader's visit coincided with the reopening of Paraguay’s embassy in Jerusalem, further solidifying the strong ties between the two nations.

In a special session of the Knesset, Netanyahu praised Peña’s principled stance against the ICC's decision, calling it a testament to Paraguay’s understanding of the truth and Israel’s right to self-defense. Earlier this year, Paraguay’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the ICC’s actions as politically motivated, stating that the arrest warrants “compromise the legitimacy of the Court” and undermine peace efforts in the Middle East.

During his address, Peña emphasized the shared values between Paraguay and Israel, including a commitment to human life, resilience through adversity, and strong leadership in the face of hostility. He condemned rising global antisemitism and expressed Paraguay’s unwavering support for Israel.

“Jerusalem is the heart of the Jewish people and, therefore, Israel’s eternal capital,” Peña said, explaining his government’s decision to move its embassy back to Jerusalem after its brief reversal in 2018.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid also spoke at the session, highlighting the importance of preserving Israel’s liberal democratic character amid global and domestic challenges. “Israel will be a liberal democracy, or it will not be,” Lapid said.

Paraguay’s embassy move to Jerusalem underscores its enduring alliance with Israel. The ceremony marked a historic moment in the bilateral relationship, with both leaders reaffirming their shared commitment to confronting global challenges together.

Peña’s steadfast support for Israel, coupled with his government’s rejection of the ICC’s politically charged actions, reinforces Paraguay’s role as a key ally in the region.
