Pnina Blayer, Haifa International Film Festival Director, Passes Away

A Cinematic Visionary Who Transformed Haifa's Cultural Landscape

Pnina Blayer, the long-serving artistic director of the Haifa International Film Festival and the Haifa Cinematheque, has passed away. Her death was announced by Ethos, the Haifa Municipality Art, Culture, and Sports Association Company, along with the Haifa Cinematheque and the Haifa International Film Festival, in a statement on Monday.

Blayer led the Haifa International Film Festival for 33 years, transforming it into a globally recognized event that attracted illustrious guests such as Willem Dafoe, Harvey Keitel, Sophie Marceau, and Paul Giamatti, among many others. The festival, held during the Sukkot holiday, is a highlight on Israel’s cultural calendar, often premiering Israeli films that go on to achieve national and international acclaim.

Her tenure saw the festival becoming a hub for international filmmakers and industry professionals, reflecting Haifa's rich diversity. Even after stepping down as artistic director in 2021, Blayer remained actively involved as the festival board's president, continuing to program sections and select guests.

Blayer was more than just a director; she was an intellectual deeply passionate about art, music, literature, and cinema. Her presence at the festival, especially in the garden next to the main venues, surrounded by the film community, was a testament to her love for the cinematic arts.

Yona Yahav, Haifa's mayor, expressed profound sorrow at Blayer's passing, acknowledging her as a first-class cultural figure who skillfully managed the festival for over three decades. “On behalf of all the residents of the city, I would like to send my condolences to Pnina’s family,” Yahav said.

Igal Zeevi, CEO of Ethos, described Blayer as "an ageless person, always full of joy in life," who turned the Haifa International Film Festival into Israel’s leading cinematic event. "Thanks to Pnina’s extraordinary abilities, we will all make an effort to preserve this status in the future as well," Zeevi affirmed.

Yaron Shamir, the current artistic director of the festival, shared his deep respect and admiration for Blayer, calling her his "teacher and guide" throughout their years of collaboration. "We shared a common passion for the art of cinema and many hours of heated discussions about films and creativity. I bow my head at her passing and send a hug to the family," Shamir said.

Pnina Blayer's legacy in the film industry and her significant contributions to Israel's cultural landscape will be remembered and cherished by many. Her visionary leadership and dedication have left an indelible mark on the Haifa International Film Festival and the broader film community.
