At Vatican, Pope Francis Meets with Injured Israeli Soldier and Sheba Medical Center Delegation

Encounter Highlights Sheba Medical Center’s Humanitarian Mission Amid Ongoing Conflict.

In a powerful gesture of solidarity, Pope Francis held a private audience at the Vatican on Wednesday with Alon Kaminer, a wounded Israeli soldier currently receiving treatment at Sheba Medical Center, along with Sheba’s Director General, Prof. Yitshak Kreiss, and Yoel Har-Even, Director of Sheba Global. The meeting followed a recent visit by a Vatican official to Sheba Medical Center in Israel, where he met with soldiers and civilians injured in the ongoing conflict, including Kaminer.

During the meeting, Pope Francis extended a personal blessing to Kaminer, expressing his compassion and solidarity with those affected by the conflict. Prof. Kreiss used the occasion to share the mission of Sheba Medical Center, describing it as a “hospital of peace and innovation” that dedicates itself to healing lives impacted by war. “Our center serves as a bridge between nations, symbolizing unity and humanitarian values,” Kreiss said, highlighting Sheba’s commitment to healing regardless of nationality or background.

Prof. Kreiss also thanked Pope Francis for his continued advocacy on behalf of hostages held in Gaza, recognizing the Pope’s role in promoting peace. The conversation included a proposal to expand collaboration between Sheba Medical Center and the Vatican, underscoring the shared values of healing, compassion, and cross-cultural understanding.

The audience reflects a growing connection between Sheba Medical Center and the Holy See, united by a commitment to humanitarianism amid ongoing regional conflict. Prof. Kreiss emphasized that both institutions aim to promote healing and reconciliation, with Sheba’s work extending beyond borders to serve as a symbol of hope and resilience.
