Pope Leo Urges Israel to Permit Humanitarian Aid into Gaza

The newly elected pontiff urges an end to hostilities and greater access for aid amid ongoing conflict.

In his first major appeal regarding the Middle East conflict, Pope Leo XIV on Wednesday called on Israel to facilitate humanitarian aid into Gaza, describing the situation in the enclave as “yet more worrying and saddening.”

“I renew my fervent appeal to allow for the entry of fair humanitarian help and to bring to an end the hostilities, the devastating price of which is paid by children, the elderly and the sick,” the pope stated during his weekly general audience in St. Peter’s Square.

Elected on May 8 to succeed the late Pope Francis, Leo XIV formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost has already addressed the conflict in Gaza multiple times since ascending to the papacy. In his first Sunday address, delivered just days after his election, the pontiff called for a ceasefire and demanded the release of all Israeli hostages held by Hamas.

His latest remarks come amid continued international scrutiny of Israel’s blockade on Gaza, which was partially lifted this week. After an 11-week halt, Israel announced on Monday it would allow limited humanitarian aid into the territory. However, the United Nations reported on Tuesday that no aid had yet been distributed, pointing to persistent logistical and security hurdles.

Leo’s comments also follow diplomatic tensions between Israel and the UK, with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announcing a pause in free trade talks and summoning the Israeli ambassador in response to the ongoing conflict.

Israel maintains that its blockade is essential to prevent Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups from seizing humanitarian supplies a claim Hamas denies. The Israeli government has insisted that increased aid will be contingent upon its secure and verifiable distribution to civilians, rather than terrorist operatives.

While global leaders voice their concerns, Israel remains resolute in its mission to dismantle Hamas following the group’s brutal October 2023 assault on Israeli communities. The war, now in its eighth month, continues to test international alliances and humanitarian patience alike.

As these debates unfold, one principle remains unwavering: the security of the State of Israel and the safe return of all its hostages must remain at the forefront of any international engagement.
