President Herzog Makes First Visit to Reservists in Gaza
Freed after more than a decade in Hamas captivity, Mengistu begins a new chapter following intensive care and healing.

President Isaac Herzog made his first official visit to IDF reservists in Gaza, meeting with soldiers from Battalion 969 and expressing deep gratitude for their service and sacrifice. The visit was conducted alongside Southern Command chief Maj.-Gen. Yaniv Asor and senior commanders, who briefed the president on the current operational situation in the sector.
"When I hear and see you firsthand, it is clear that everything you do is aimed at protecting the citizens of Israel, protecting the communities in the Gaza envelope, and protecting the entire country," Herzog told the reservists. “You left work, family, and routine, and came without hesitation because you knew there is no substitute for your presence. It is also important for me to reflect on the enormous burden on the reservists. We must understand that at this moment, the people of Israel must be united, and never give up for a moment."
During the visit, Herzog toured a newly established, secret IDF position in northern Gaza a stronghold built by Battalion 969 and named “Israela.” This forward position is designed both to project Israeli strength and to act as a critical defense line, ensuring that any potential infiltration remains far from Israeli civilian areas.
Strategically located, “Israela” and its neighboring positions provide the IDF with a commanding view over Beit Hanun, Beit Lahiya, Jabalya, and even Gaza City. The site symbolizes Israel’s determination to safeguard its borders while maintaining operational control over volatile areas.
The president’s visit underscored the nation’s reliance on its reservists, who have left behind families and careers to stand on the frontlines. Their commitment, Herzog said, represents the unity and resilience of Israel during a time of ongoing security challenges.
