Rachel Edri and Ofakim Police Honored for Heroism on October 7
City awards “Yakir Ha’ir” to hostage survivor and police officers for lifesaving actions during Hamas terror attack.

In a powerful tribute to bravery and resilience, the city of Ofakim has awarded its highest civic honor the “Yakir Ha’ir” (Honorary Citizen) award to Rachel Edri and the officers of the Ofakim Police Station for their courage during the October 7 Hamas terror attacks.
The ceremony, held as part of Ofakim’s 70th anniversary celebrations, recognized Edri’s extraordinary composure and ingenuity during the 15-hour ordeal in which she and her husband David were held hostage by armed terrorists. Through a combination of calm, psychological intuition, and quiet strength, Rachel offered the terrorists cookies and drinks a gesture that delayed violence and allowed Yamam counterterrorism forces to storm the house and eliminate the attackers.
Her husband, David Edri, passed away nearly a year later. Rachel’s bravery, however, left a lasting impression not only on her rescuers but on the entire nation. “With rare resourcefulness, calmness, and bravery, she managed the dangerous situation, calmed the terrorists, and assisted the rescue forces,” read the award committee’s statement. “Her character has become a symbol of strength, wisdom, and civilian heroism.”
The Ofakim Police Station also received the Yakir Ha’ir award, led at the time by former commander Nivi Ohana. Ohana had initially engaged terrorists at the Nova music festival before returning to Ofakim, where he was wounded while continuing to fight. The commendation highlighted the officers’ actions under fire: “With spirit and self-sacrifice, under fire, they led rescue operations and maintained order. For all this, the entire city salutes them.”
Ofakim Mayor Itzik Danino said the city chose to honor “individuals and symbols who embody the spirit, heroism, and commitment of our city.” He added, “Rachel Edri and the Ofakim Police Station were at the forefront of Ofakim’s steadfast stand during the events of October 7 and the days that followed. The recognition is not only a show of personal gratitude but an expression of appreciation on behalf of all the residents of Ofakim.”
