Rare Frogfish Spotted in Gulf of Eilat
A master of disguise surprises divers in one of Israel’s most biodiverse marine sanctuaries.

The tranquil waters of the Gulf of Eilat delivered a rare and exciting surprise this past weekend, as amateur diver Menashe Pinchas captured a rare sighting of a frogfish an elusive and expertly camouflaged species not native to the region. The encounter, at a depth of 12 meters near an artificial reef, is already sparking interest among marine experts and nature enthusiasts alike.
Pinchas, a seasoned diver from Ganei Tikva, described the moment as “fascinating and thrilling.” The frogfish, from the Antennariidae family, was perched motionless on a submerged metal structure. Known for their exceptional ability to blend into their surroundings, frogfish are nearly invisible to the untrained eye making even a brief sighting a moment of awe. The only giveaway? A subtle movement of the eyes.
Frogfish are considered extremely rare in the Gulf of Eilat due to their natural distribution being far from this region. Their appearance here is not only surprising but may also hint at broader environmental shifts occurring beneath the surface of one of Israel’s richest marine ecosystems.
Understanding the significance of the moment, Pinchas promptly submitted his footage to the Israel Nature and Parks Authority and the Interuniversity Institute for Marine Sciences in Eilat. Both institutions monitor marine biodiversity in the Red Sea, and this unusual encounter could help deepen scientific understanding of species migration and ecological changes.
“As someone who’s been diving for many years, I can say this is not an everyday sighting,” Pinchas reflected. “I hope the footage helps broaden our understanding of fish species in the Gulf whether this is a one-time event or a sign of deeper changes.”
The Gulf of Eilat, located at Israel’s southern tip, is celebrated for its vibrant coral reefs and spectacular marine life. It’s a place where nature’s wonders are on full display year-round. Now, with this surprise guest, its status as a unique biological haven has only been reinforced.
Israel’s commitment to environmental stewardship and scientific exploration makes encounters like this one all the more meaningful. They offer both inspiration and a reminder of the mysteries still waiting to be uncovered beneath the waves.
