GOP Senators Propose New Legislation to Combat Antisemitism

Legislation targets rising antisemitic hate on US college campuses.

In response to the alarming rise of antisemitic incidents on US college campuses, Republican Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Rick Scott (R-FL) have introduced the “Preventing Antisemitic Harassment on Campus Act.” This legislation aims to expand the protections of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include antisemitic discrimination, ensuring Jewish students receive the same safeguards as other minority groups on campuses.

The bill would impose strict penalties on colleges that fail to address antisemitism and empower the US Department of Education to monitor private lawsuits filed by Jewish students. It builds on an executive order from 2019, issued during the Trump administration, which recognized Zionism’s central role in Jewish identity and enforced civil rights protections for Jewish students.

Rubio emphasized the bill's importance, stating that universities have repeatedly failed to protect Jewish students from a growing tide of hate and discrimination. “My Preventing Antisemitic Harassment on Campus Act is a critical step toward ensuring that our educational institutions carry out their responsibility,” Rubio said. Senator Scott echoed these sentiments, pointing out that no student should live in fear due to antisemitism on their campus. Both senators stressed the need to hold colleges accountable for creating safe environments for all students.

The introduction of this bill comes nearly a year after the Hamas-led massacre on October 7, which triggered a sharp increase in antisemitic incidents in the US, particularly in higher education. A report from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) revealed a staggering 477 percent rise in anti-Zionist activities on college campuses, with some of the worst incidents occurring at prestigious institutions like Columbia University and the University of Michigan.

These troubling figures highlight the growing challenge faced by Jewish students, with physical assaults, vandalism, and hate speech becoming more frequent. The ADL has called on universities to take stronger action, and this bill seeks to ensure that they do so by addressing the issue at a legislative level.

As antisemitism continues to plague college campuses across the country, this bill represents a crucial effort to protect Jewish students and promote a culture of accountability within academic institutions. The rising tide of hate cannot go unchecked, and America’s universities must rise to the challenge of defending the rights of all their students.
