Richard Gere Takes Starring Role in Israeli Film Remake 'Longing
Savi Gabizon Directs English-Language Remake Set to Release on June 7
Richard Gere is set to captivate audiences in the English-language remake of Longing, directed by Israeli filmmaker Savi Gabizon. Scheduled for release in US theaters on June 7, the film promises a poignant narrative that has already garnered critical acclaim.
Longing, originally directed by Gabizon, won the BNL Audience Award at the Venice Film Festival. The story revolves around a man, portrayed by Gere, whose past resurfaces when an old girlfriend, played by Diane Kruger, reveals that he fathered a child with her. The child, now deceased, becomes the central figure in a tale of loss and revelation.
Gere, a seasoned actor with a history of involvement in Israeli cinema, previously starred in the 2016 movie Norman, directed by Israeli filmmaker Joseph Cedar. In Norman, Gere played a conman who forms a unique relationship with an Israeli prime minister. Filmed in both the US and Israel, Norman showcased Gere's versatility and connection to Israeli stories.
Unlike typical remakes where new directors take over, Gabizon himself is directing the English-language version of Longing, ensuring the original's essence and emotional depth are preserved. This move is noteworthy, reflecting Gabizon’s commitment to his story and its characters.
Gabizon’s filmography includes notable works such as Shuroo (1991) and Lovesick on Nana Street (1995). His 2003 film, Nina’s Tragedies, was the first Israeli film to compete in the Best Narrative Feature section at the Sundance Film Festival, establishing him as a prominent figure in Israeli cinema.
As Gere and Kruger bring their talents to Longing, audiences can anticipate a film that delves deep into themes of love, loss, and unexpected connections. The collaboration between Gere and Gabizon highlights the seamless blend of Hollywood star power and Israeli storytelling prowess.
