Rockets into Roses transforms symbols of terror into masterpieces

Israeli artist turns Hamas rocket remnants into powerful symbols of beauty and hope.

In the small village of Moshav Yated, nestled near the borders of Gaza and Egypt, artist Yaron Bob has found an extraordinary way to transform symbols of destruction into objects of hope. In a region where the sound of air raid sirens frequently interrupts daily life, Bob turns the remnants of Hamas-fired rockets into stunning works of art through his acclaimed project, Rockets into Roses.

Yaron, a computer teacher by profession, began his artistic journey in 2008, after years of living under the constant threat of rocket attacks. He recalls how the sight of Kassam rockets once filled him with anger and despair, but an epiphany changed his perspective. “I decided to create something beautiful a rose from the Kassam,” he explains. What began as a coping mechanism has since blossomed into a unique art project recognized worldwide.

From jewelry and Menorahs to mezuzahs and sculptures, Yaron’s creations are a testament to resilience and creativity. One of his most extraordinary series, “The Sound of Peace,” features musical instruments fashioned from rocket fragments. These pieces play melodies, including national anthems and famous musical themes, offering a poignant reminder of harmony born from chaos.

Yaron’s work has reached global audiences, gracing the collections of leaders like Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog, and former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence. In 2019, one of his menorahs was chosen for the White House Hanukkah celebration, marking a historic moment.

Beyond art, Yaron’s mission carries a powerful message. In 2016, during an exhibition in Strasbourg, France, he urged European Parliamentarians to reevaluate their aid to Gaza, warning that funds often fueled terror rather than peace. His words contributed to decisions to reduce financial aid to groups misusing resources, emphasizing the importance of education and constructive initiatives.

Through Rockets into Roses, Yaron not only raises awareness about the reality of life under threat but also supports local communities. Proceeds from his sales help fund bomb shelters, providing a lifeline for those living in rocket-prone regions. Yet, his ultimate dream is to see his work rendered unnecessary. “I hope for a day when I’ll be out of business,” he says, longing for a future free of violence and fear.

Yaron Bob’s artistry is more than a personal triumph; it is a symbol of the human spirit’s ability to create light in the darkest of times. Share this story or subscribe to our newsletter to learn more about Israel’s inspiring voices and remarkable innovations.
