Ron Dermer to Step Down from Israeli Government
Netanyahu's close adviser exits amid growing cabinet rifts and criticism over Gaza war decision-making.

In a move that could reshape Israel’s inner political circle, Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer will step down from his role, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday. While no formal resignation date was given, Netanyahu assured ministers that Dermer would “remain around,” hinting at a possible advisory role going forward.
The decision follows months of speculation and repeated reports of Dermer’s planned departure. Some of his responsibilities may be transferred to Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, according to Israeli media.
While the official reason for Dermer’s departure remains unknown, the move comes amid growing tension inside the government, particularly regarding Netanyahu’s handling of the war in Gaza. Security cabinet members have accused the prime minister and Dermer of withholding critical information from key officials. One source described the situation bluntly: “It’s him and Dermer against the world.”
Another official criticized Netanyahu for isolating his leadership: “The source of the clash between the Chief of Staff and the Prime Minister and between the security officials and political leadership is not just about differing perceptions regarding Gaza. It’s the feeling of exclusion. The Prime Minister does not share the plans beyond official statements.”
Dermer, a longtime confidant of Netanyahu and former Israeli ambassador to the U.S., has played a key role in shaping Israel’s foreign policy, particularly with regard to the U.S. and Iran. His close ties to the prime minister, and his central role in diplomatic affairs, have made him one of the most influential but also controversial figures in the cabinet.
His departure could signal a shift in strategy or tone within the Netanyahu administration especially as criticism mounts over lack of transparency in Israel’s post-war plans for Gaza and continued political polarization at home.
In the same cabinet meeting, Netanyahu directed Justice Minister Yariv Levin and Coalition Chairman MK Simcha Rothman to advance legislation on civil service appointments, accusing the bureaucracy of harboring anti-democratic tendencies. He specifically mentioned the ultra-Orthodox community as a group that should be “recruited” to support the legislative push.
Ron Dermer’s resignation adds another chapter to the evolving political landscape in Israel a nation navigating intense domestic debates and global scrutiny while still defending itself on multiple fronts.
