Shalva-Saucony Team Gears Up for 2024 New York Marathon

Israel's largest marathon team prepares to make history and support Shalva's children.

The Shalva-Saucony team, the first and only team from Israel, is gearing up for the 2024 New York Marathon with 260 runners, making it one of the largest non-US teams in the race. Originally set to participate in the November 2023 marathon, the team's plans were postponed due to the events of October 7 and the ensuing war, with all 120 runners remaining in Israel. This year, the team has expanded significantly to 260 members, showcasing a robust commitment to their cause.

The team's intensive preparations involve four running workouts per week, combined with strength training, and often swimming or cycling. These joint sessions not only improve their physical endurance but also foster a strong sense of camaraderie and shared purpose among the runners. Their ultimate goal is to successfully complete the New York Marathon to benefit the children of Shalva, an organization dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities.

A recent team meeting took place at the Tel Aviv Port, where, at 6 a.m., members gathered at the Saucony store, their main sponsor, and embarked on a 15-kilometer run together. The sight of the team, clad in their distinctive yellow training uniforms emblazoned with the symbol for the hostages' release, was a powerful and inspiring presence in Yarkon Park and along the Tel Aviv Port.

Leading the team is Saar Buchbinder, an autistic spectrum runner and Special Olympics champion in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. Other notable team members include Hila Korach, a Channel 13 news anchor; Assaf Gil, Deputy CEO of Bank Yahav; Amos Pam, the brand manager for Finish in Europe and Australia; and Tzachi Iron, co-CEO of Psagot Equity.

The Shalva-Saucony team began its journey in 2022, making history as the first Israeli team to participate in the full marathon (42.2 km) for Shalva’s children. Each runner raised funds to support the children and their families. In 2023, the team nearly doubled in size to 120 runners but did not participate due to the war. Now, with 260 dedicated members, the team is set to make an even bigger impact.

Shalva believes in providing every individual, regardless of age, the opportunity to realize their potential and achieve full equality. The 260 team members are dedicating their marathon run to the people of Israel, symbolizing the triumph of spirit, unity, and acceptance. They aim to inspire Shalva’s children and their families to conquer their personal marathons and daily challenges.
