Shapiro and Murray Commend Israel’s Battle Against Terrorism
Conservative thinkers emphasize Israel’s strength and resilience as vital to the moral and cultural survival of the West.
Jerusalem’s International Convention Center hosted a landmark event on Tuesday night featuring conservative heavyweights Ben Shapiro and Douglas Murray, who addressed a sold-out audience of over 3,000. The "Freedom of Zion" conference became a rallying cry for Israel’s fight against terrorism and its role as a cornerstone of Western values.
Shapiro and Murray, both outspoken defenders of Israel, praised the nation’s resilience and fighting spirit in the face of existential threats. “Thank you on behalf of Western civilization for fighting the fight the rest of the West should be fighting,” Shapiro declared to thunderous applause.
Shapiro, a prominent Jewish-American political commentator, spoke of Israel as the “tip of the spear in a civilizational battle,” underscoring its vital role in upholding values foundational to Western success. “You are an outpost of Western civilization,” he said, stressing that Israel’s fight is not just for its own survival but for the future of the free world.
Douglas Murray, a British author and journalist, captivated the audience with his reflections on Israel’s unique challenges. He described the injustice of global criticism aimed at the Jewish state, particularly after the October 7 Hamas attacks. “Israel is the only nation in the world which, when it gets attacked, then gets attacked again,” Murray said, lamenting the moral double standards applied to Israel.
Murray’s connection to Israel has deepened over the past year, especially after his visit to Gaza’s front lines. His courage and steadfast support have made him a symbol of solidarity among Israelis. “When I read about something terrible happening here, it affects me personally, as if it’s family,” he shared.
Both speakers highlighted the heroism of Israeli soldiers. Shapiro recounted meeting Ari, a 22-year-old IDF soldier severely wounded in Gaza. Despite his injuries, Ari’s only question was, “What more can I do?” Murray echoed this ethos, telling reservists fresh from the front, “You are the tip of the spear for the entire free world.”
Murray received the “Freedom of Zion” award for his vocal support, presented by Doron Spielman, the IDF’s English-language spokesman, and Amiad Cohen, CEO of the Herut Center for Israeli Liberty. Cohen noted that the event underscored the conservative belief in “peace through strength and total victory in war.”
Both Shapiro and Murray urged Israel to maintain its strength and independence. Shapiro called for reform to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and ensure equitable military service for all Israelis, including the ultra-Orthodox. He criticized the reliance on moral persuasion to defend Israel’s cause internationally, advocating instead for a focus on strength and self-reliance.
The evening ended on a high note, with attendees energized by the duo’s message of solidarity and the importance of Israel’s fight for the values underpinning Western civilization.
