Sullivan and Netanyahu discuss Syria, advancing a hostage deal

IDF buffer zone control and hostage negotiations take center stage in high-level meeting.

U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Thursday to discuss critical issues including Syria and the ongoing effort to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas.

Netanyahu emphasized that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) would temporarily maintain control of the buffer zone along the Syrian border until a reliable force is established to uphold the 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement. “This measure is essential to protect Israel’s security and to prevent terrorist activity emanating from Syria,” the Prime Minister’s Office stated.

The leaders also discussed providing humanitarian assistance to Syrian minorities affected by the recent collapse of the Assad regime and ensuring that Syrian territory does not become a haven for terrorists.

The meeting included top Israeli officials, such as Defense Minister Israel Katz, Foreign Affairs Minister Gideon Sa’ar, Mossad Director David Barnea, and National Security Council Director Tzachi Hanegbi. The U.S. delegation included Special Presidential Envoy to the Middle East Brett McGurk and U.S. Ambassador to Israel Jack Lew.

Sullivan also addressed the ongoing hostage situation involving Americans held by Hamas. Speaking after the meeting, he expressed optimism about the progress of negotiations.

“We are close to a deal on the hostages. We need to bridge the last gaps to reach an agreement,” Sullivan stated.

Netanyahu reiterated his government’s commitment to securing the return of all hostages, Israeli and foreign nationals alike. U.S. officials confirmed that three American citizens Edan Alexander, Keith Siegel, and Sagi Dekel-Chen are believed to be alive.

The discussion highlighted shared U.S.-Israeli priorities in the region. Sullivan’s visit reinforced the Biden administration’s ongoing support for Israel’s security while addressing broader Middle East stability.

As diplomatic efforts continue, both nations are working to advance solutions that address immediate security concerns and humanitarian needs.
