Taiwan’s President Says Nation Can Learn from IDF, Compares Israel to David vs. Goliath

Lai Ching-te praises Israeli defense doctrine as a model for deterring Chinese aggression.

In a powerful address underscoring the growing alignment between democracies under threat, Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te drew a bold comparison between Israel’s military doctrine and Taiwan’s struggle to maintain sovereignty in the face of rising Chinese aggression. Speaking at an event hosted by AIPAC in Taipei, Lai likened Israel to David standing against Goliath a metaphor he said resonates deeply with the Taiwanese people.

“The people of Taiwan often look to the example of the Jewish people when facing challenges to our international standing and threats to our sovereignty from China,” Lai told attendees. “The people of Taiwan have never become discouraged.”

Lai praised Israel’s military preparedness and defense strategies, calling them a valuable model for his own country. “Appeasement has never stopped aggression,” he said. “Peace through strength has long been a shared belief among Israeli, American, and Taiwanese societies.”

Although Israel does not formally recognize Taiwan diplomatically due to international pressure from Beijing, the two nations maintain strong unofficial ties, including de facto embassies and expanding cooperation in technology, defense, and innovation.

Lai announced the development of a new “T-Dome” missile defense system, modeled on Israel’s Iron Dome, which he credited as a breakthrough in missile interception and deterrence. He also noted influence from President Donald Trump’s Golden Dome initiative, signaling Taiwan’s strategic alignment with both Israel and the United States.

“I believe that trilateral Taiwan-U.S.-Israel cooperation can help achieve regional peace, stability, and prosperity,” Lai said. Taiwan’s foreign minister, Lin Chia-lung, reinforced confidence in U.S. support, stating he does not believe Trump would “abandon” Taiwan amid Beijing’s intensifying threats.

As China continues to pressure Taiwan diplomatically and militarily, the island’s leadership has become increasingly vocal in promoting a self-defense posture inspired by Israel’s principles: swift retaliation, layered missile defense, and societal resilience.

President Lai’s remarks serve as both a strategic declaration and a symbolic affirmation of the values Israel and Taiwan share democracy, sovereignty, and an unwavering will to survive against larger hostile powers.

Israel’s example continues to inspire nations defending their freedom. Share this article or subscribe to our newsletter for more stories of global solidarity and strength.
