Trump Envoy Travels to Doha Amid Intensifying Hostage Negotiations
Steve Witkoff joins talks in Qatar amid Trump’s warning of consequences if hostages remain in Hamas captivity.
With less than two weeks before Donald Trump’s inauguration, his Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff has traveled to Doha, Qatar, to advance negotiations aimed at securing the release of hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza.
Speaking at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, Witkoff expressed optimism about the talks, stating:
“I believe they’re doing an excellent job in Doha. I’m hopeful that by the [Jan. 20] inauguration, we’ll have positive news to share on behalf of the president.”
Trump, however, delivered a stark warning about the consequences if a deal is not reached before he takes office:
“All hell will break loose if those hostages aren’t returned. I don’t want to undermine the negotiations, but if they’re not back by the time I take office, the Middle East will face chaos like never before.”
Hamas currently holds 100 hostages in Gaza, with Israel estimating that at least 60 are still alive. Qatar, which maintains close ties with Hamas, has played a central role in mediation efforts.
Trump praised Witkoff’s involvement, calling him a “great negotiator” and someone who understands the complexities of the Middle East.
“Many so-called experts don’t have that ability,” Trump said. “Steve is the right person for this job.”
As pressure mounts, U.S., Israeli, and Qatari officials are pushing for a breakthrough before January 20. Trump’s direct warnings suggest that his incoming administration may take a more aggressive stance if Hamas refuses to comply.
The world watches as the Doha talks unfold, with the fate of dozens of Israeli hostages hanging in the balance.
