Trump Slams Harvard as Antisemitic and Threat to Democracy

President accuses Ivy League school of fueling hate, fires lawyer representing it in federal legal fight.

President Donald Trump sharply criticized Harvard University on Thursday, branding it “an antisemitic, far-left institution” and a “threat to democracy” in a scathing post on Truth Social. The comments come amid a deepening legal and political standoff between the Trump administration and the Ivy League school.

Trump accused Harvard of admitting students who “want to rip our country apart” and allowing “crazed lunatics to enter and exit the classroom, and spew fake anger and hate.” He added, “The place is a liberal mess... It is truly horrific!”

The president’s post comes as Harvard faces intense scrutiny for its handling of antisemitism on campus and its resistance to recent federal oversight measures. Trump’s administration has frozen $2.2 billion in federal grants and contracts to the university pending compliance with new government requirements related to campus discrimination, viewpoint diversity, and ideological bias.

Harvard has since announced it will sue the federal government, rejecting Trump’s conditions as a violation of its First Amendment rights and institutional autonomy.

In the same post, Trump targeted William Burck, a lawyer who was simultaneously representing Harvard and the Trump Organization. Trump announced that Burck had been dismissed, and hinted that the lawyer’s affiliation with Harvard was the final straw. “He’s not that good anyway,” Trump wrote. “I hope my very big and beautiful company, now run by my sons, gets rid of him ASAP!”

The Trump Organization later confirmed it had severed ties with Burck.

The president’s attack underscores growing conservative frustration with elite universities, which have come under fire for allowing campus antisemitism, anti-Israel rhetoric, and BDS-aligned activism to flourish unchecked.

The conflict has been brewing for months, with the Trump administration moving aggressively to challenge academic institutions perceived to be hostile to Jews, Zionists, and free expression. Harvard, long considered an academic and cultural pillar of the American establishment, now finds itself on the front lines of that battle.
