Trump Discusses Close Ties with Netanyahu, Daily Conversations Amid Ongoing Conflict
As tensions escalate in Gaza, Trump positions himself as a key player in US-Israel relations.
Former President Donald Trump recently claimed to speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu almost daily, reinforcing their strong relationship. At a campaign rally in Georgia, Trump stated that Netanyahu calls him frequently, emphasizing their close connection as Israel continues its military campaign against Hamas.
“We have a very good relationship,” Trump told supporters, adding that Israel’s leadership is working independently despite opposition from the Biden administration. He criticized current President Joe Biden for his hesitancy in backing certain Israeli actions, particularly referencing Biden’s reluctance to support strikes on Iranian nuclear or oil facilities in response to missile attacks.
Trump, who has consistently portrayed himself as a staunch ally of Israel, asserted that Netanyahu seeks his advice on major issues. This close interaction comes as the Israeli government faces critical decisions in its war against Hamas, following the group’s attacks and ongoing conflict in Gaza. Trump’s remarks highlight his position as a supporter of swift, decisive military action, contrasting with the more cautious approach attributed to Biden.
The close relationship between Trump and Netanyahu dates back to Trump’s first term, when major pro-Israel policies were enacted. These included moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem, withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal, recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, and facilitating the historic Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations. Despite their past fallout, after Netanyahu acknowledged Biden’s victory in the 2020 US election, the two appear to have reconciled, with Netanyahu meeting Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort earlier this year.
While Netanyahu praised Trump’s contributions to Israel during his visit to Congress in July, Israeli officials have voiced concern over Trump’s strong calls for a quick resolution to the conflict with Hamas. They worry that failing to meet Trump’s expectations, particularly if he regains the presidency, could strain the US-Israel alliance.
As tensions rise in Gaza, Trump's comments suggest he may play a pivotal role in shaping future US-Israel policies, reinforcing his long-standing commitment to Israel’s security and sovereignty.
