Trump’s Cabinet Nominees Targeted by Violent and Pro-Palestinian Threats
Threats against Lee Zeldin, Elise Stefanik, and others prompt swift law enforcement response.
Members of President-elect Donald Trump’s administration-in-waiting have become targets of violent threats, including bomb scares and other attacks, the Trump transition team announced Wednesday. Among those threatened were Lee Zeldin, the Jewish former congressman nominated for EPA administrator, and Elise Stefanik, Trump’s pick for ambassador to the United Nations.
Incoming White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed that several Cabinet nominees and appointees faced life-threatening incidents. “Last night and this morning, several of President Trump’s Cabinet nominees and Administration appointees were targeted in violent, unAmerican threats to their lives and those who live with them,” Leavitt said in a statement. “These attacks ranged from bomb threats to ‘swatting.’” She thanked law enforcement for their swift response in ensuring the safety of those targeted.
Zeldin reported that his family was targeted by a pipe bomb threat accompanied by a “pro-Palestinian themed message.” Writing on X (formerly Twitter), Zeldin said, “My family and I were not home at the time and are safe. We are working with law enforcement to learn more as this situation develops.” He also expressed gratitude to local officers for protecting his family and community.
Elise Stefanik, who has been an outspoken supporter of Israel, was similarly targeted. Her office stated that her family received a bomb threat while traveling home for Thanksgiving. “We are especially grateful to our law enforcement officers and military families who are on duty over the holiday season,” her office said.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R., Fla.), Trump’s now-withdrawn pick for attorney general, was also reportedly a target, according to Punchbowl News.
The threats, particularly those carrying pro-Palestinian messaging, come amid heightened tensions in the U.S. and abroad following the Hamas-led attack on Israel in October 2023 and the subsequent escalation in the region. Zeldin and Stefanik’s vocal support for Israel has likely drawn them into the crosshairs of extremist rhetoric and actions.
Leavitt condemned the threats as an attack on democratic values and urged unity in rejecting such actions. “President Trump and the entire transition team are grateful for the swift action taken by law enforcement and remain committed to ensuring the safety of all appointees and their families.”
