Trump Proposes US Takeover and Reconstruction of Gaza

Netanyahu calls the plan a historic opportunity to reshape the region.

In a bold and unexpected announcement, U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that the United States will take over the Gaza Strip and oversee its rebuilding and economic development. Speaking alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump outlined a long-term U.S. role in clearing Gaza of explosives, demolishing destroyed buildings, and creating jobs and housing.

"The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it," Trump declared. "We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all the dangerous, unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site, level the site, and get rid of the destroyed buildings."

Trump hinted that American troops could be deployed if necessary, stating, "We’ll do what is necessary. If it’s necessary, we’ll do that." He added that the U.S. would take a "long-term ownership position" in Gaza and develop the area into a thriving economic hub.

While neighboring Arab states, including Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia, have rejected the idea of resettling Palestinians outside of Gaza, Trump suggested that wealthy Gulf nations could fund the relocation.

"Palestinians will live there. Many people will live there," Trump said, describing his vision for a new, internationally administered Gaza.

Netanyahu praised Trump’s ambitious vision, saying, "President Trump is taking this to a much higher level. This could change history."

Trump also teased a decision on U.S. recognition of Israeli sovereignty over Judea and Samaria, stating that an announcement could come within the next four weeks.

Trump’s plan to rebuild Gaza echoes elements of his 2020 Mideast peace proposal, which envisioned transforming Gaza’s coastline into a tourism destination.

"I don’t want to be cute, but this could be the Riviera of the Middle East," Trump remarked, adding that he plans to visit Gaza as part of a broader Middle East tour.

While details remain uncertain, the proposal marks a dramatic shift in U.S. policy toward Gaza, with the potential to reshape the geopolitical landscape of the region.
