US Approves $20.3 Billion in Arms Sales to Israel

Massive defense package bolsters Israel’s military capabilities against regional threats.

In a significant move reaffirming the United States' commitment to Israel's security, the Biden administration has approved a massive $20.3 billion arms package for Israel. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), a branch of the U.S. Department of Defense, announced that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has given the green light to five major defense sales to Israel. This package includes advanced fighter jets, missiles, and various munitions aimed at enhancing Israel's defense capabilities.

At the heart of this arms deal is the sale of 50 new F-15IA fighter jets, valued at approximately $18.82 billion. Manufactured by Boeing, these state-of-the-art aircraft will significantly boost the Israel Air Force's fleet, providing advanced aerial capabilities and enhancing interoperability with U.S. systems. The DSCA highlighted that these jets will play a crucial role in bolstering Israel's homeland defense and deterring regional threats. Delivery of the F-15IA jets is expected to commence in 2029.

In addition to the fighter jets, the U.S. has approved the sale of advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles (AMRAAMs) and related equipment, worth up to $102.5 million. These missiles, produced by RTX Corporation, are designed to counter airborne threats, such as missile and drone attacks, exemplified by the missile salvo launched at Israel in April 2024.

The defense package also includes 32,739 tank cartridges and 50,400 high-explosive mortar cartridges, collectively valued at approximately $835.2 million. These munitions, made by General Dynamics and Northrop Grumman, will enhance Israel's ground defense capabilities. Additionally, the sale of modified medium tactical vehicles, valued at $583.1 million, will further strengthen Israel's defense infrastructure.

The DSCA emphasized that these sales will enhance Israel's ability to meet current and future threats while serving as a deterrent to adversaries in the region. The agency also reiterated that this arms deal aligns with U.S. national interests by ensuring that Israel maintains a strong self-defense capability.

Shelley Greenspan, the White House liaison to the U.S. Jewish community, underscored the importance of this deal, stating that these proposed sales will support Israel’s long-term security by replenishing critical munitions and upgrading military capabilities. Greenspan noted that Israel faces severe threats from regional actors, including Iran and its proxies such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. The U.S. commitment to Israel’s security, she affirmed, remains unwavering.

As Israel continues to navigate a complex and volatile region, this substantial arms deal underscores the deep and enduring partnership between the U.S. and Israel, aimed at ensuring that the Jewish state can defend itself against all threats.
