U.S. Poised to Approve $1 Billion Arms Deal for Israel

The initiative includes advanced munitions and equipment to bolster Israel's defense capabilities.

The United States is preparing to approve a $1 billion military aid package for Israel, including thousands of 1,000-pound bombs and armored bulldozers, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal on Monday.

The Trump administration has requested congressional approval for the deal, which will be funded through existing US military aid to Israel. The package follows Trump’s decision to lift a hold placed by the Biden administration on shipments of 2,000-pound bombs, previously blocked over concerns about their use in densely populated areas of Gaza.

In parallel with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington, President Trump is expected to announce a full withdrawal from the United Nations Human Rights Council and maintain the halt in funding for UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.

Netanyahu has long criticized UNRWA, accusing it of anti-Israel incitement and ties to terror groups. His government officially banned UNRWA in Israel last week, following revelations that UNRWA staff were involved in Hamas’s October 7 attack and that the agency’s infrastructure was used for terrorist activities.

The Biden administration initially froze US funding to UNRWA in 2023 when evidence emerged of its staff directly participating in the Hamas massacre. Congress later passed legislation blocking UNRWA funding, which is set to expire next month, but the Republican-controlled Congress is expected to extend the ban indefinitely.

The UN and UNRWA have yet to respond to the latest developments. However, Trump’s new policy shifts reflect his administration’s ongoing commitment to Israeli security, while signaling a more aggressive stance against UN institutions seen as hostile to Israel.

With continued tensions in Gaza and Lebanon, the US military aid package aims to ensure Israel’s strategic advantage in the region. Meanwhile, the permanent defunding of UNRWA and withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council mark a clear policy direction favoring Israeli interests over continued UN engagement.
