U.S. Confirms $3.5 Billion in Military Support for Israel
New Defense Package Reinforces Israel’s Military Preparedness Amid Regional Tensions.
The United States has announced the release of $3.5 billion in military aid to Israel, marking a significant commitment as part of the $14.1 billion supplemental funding approved by Congress in April. This aid, intended for weapons and military equipment currently being manufactured for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in the U.S., offers a strategic boost to Israel's defense capabilities.
While this tranche does not cover immediate military supplies for the ongoing conflict with Hamas, it alleviates future budgetary concerns for Israel. The timing for the release of the remaining funds from the $14.1 billion package remains uncertain.
The aid was confirmed under the Israel Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, a comprehensive $95 billion support package for Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan, with Ukraine receiving over $60 billion. Additionally, the package includes $9 billion in humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip.
Since the escalation of conflict, sparked by the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas on Israeli civilians, American military equipment has been arriving in Israel. The assault by Hamas, an Iranian proxy, led to the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals, with 252 taken hostage.
The Biden administration has reaffirmed its commitment to Israel, emphasizing "ironclad support" as the nation faces direct threats from Iran. This stance comes in light of the recent assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, an event for which Israel has not claimed responsibility.
The U.S. has positioned a robust naval presence in the Gulf of Oman, ready to monitor Iranian activities and shield Israel from potential missile threats. The U.S.S. Lincoln aircraft carrier group is heading to the region, joining several destroyers equipped with anti-missile systems. The U.S.S. Wasp amphibious assault ship recently docked in Cyprus, while a squadron of F-22 Raptor fighter jets has been deployed to an undisclosed location nearby.
"The arrival of the Raptors sends a clear message to the region that we want to reduce tensions and serves as a powerful deterrent," stated US Department of Defense spokesperson Sabrina Singh.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin assured Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant of the U.S.'s readiness to defend Israel if attacked, highlighting a blend of military strength and diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions with Iran. The American show of force is designed to deter further conflict and maintain stability in the Middle East.
