Indications Point to Israel Killing Hamas Chief Mohammed Deif, Says US Envoy
Unconfirmed Reports Suggest High-Profile Target Eliminated Amid Ongoing Conflict.
U.S. Ambassador to Israel Jack Lew indicated in a briefing to the American Jewish community on Monday that there are “indications” Hamas leader Mohammed Deif may have been killed in an Israeli strike. While Lew could not confirm Deif's death, the potential elimination of the high-profile target has garnered significant attention.
Deif, a long-standing leader of Hamas’s military wing, has been a top target for Israeli forces due to his involvement in numerous attacks against Israel. His possible death would represent a significant blow to Hamas.
In the same call, Ambassador Lew expressed hope that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's upcoming speech to Congress on July 24 will be bipartisan. He also noted that U.S. President Joe Biden has reportedly extended an invitation to Netanyahu to visit the White House, marking the first such offer since Netanyahu's election in December 2022.
