US and Israel Strengthen Partnership to Advance Green Energy Innovation
Bipartisan support renews the US-Israel Energy Center, accelerating clean energy collaboration.
In a significant move to bolster cooperation between the United States and Israel, US legislators have introduced the US-Israel Energy Center Reauthorization Act of 2024, aimed at advancing green energy technologies. The bipartisan bill, introduced by Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-25), Buddy Carter (GA-01), Joe Wilson (SC-02), and Brad Schneider (IL-10), renews a longstanding initiative to enhance collaboration in the development of cutting-edge clean energy solutions.
This legislation builds on the success of the BIRD (Binational Industrial Research and Development) Energy program, which was first established in 2009. The original program was designed to promote joint energy research and innovation between the two nations, addressing shared energy challenges and creating opportunities for economic growth. Over the past decade, the BIRD Energy program has invested more than $38 million into over 49 collaborative projects, ranging from flexible solar panels for wireless devices to solar energy systems that operate on water reservoirs.
The US-Israel Energy Center not only supports groundbreaking energy innovations but also fosters economic competitiveness and job creation. The program funds up to 50% of project budgets, from research and development through to the initial stages of sales and marketing. Importantly, the initiative assumes shared risk, meaning companies are not required to repay funding if their project fails to reach commercial success.
Speaking about the renewal of the program, Rep. Wasserman Schultz emphasized the critical importance of the partnership: “This initiative not only strengthens our economic ties but also accelerates innovation, which is the key to protecting our environment while growing our economy.” She highlighted how the renewed legislation would drive advancements in areas such as energy storage, renewable energy, and cybersecurity for energy infrastructure.
The collaborative efforts of the US and Israel have already yielded substantial progress in clean energy technology, and with the passage of this new bill, both nations are poised to continue leading the way in green innovation. By renewing the US-Israel Energy Center, legislators hope to expand these achievements, further addressing the urgent global need for sustainable and secure energy solutions.
This act represents more than just technological cooperation it is a testament to the enduring bond between the United States and Israel, with both nations working together to combat climate change and secure a greener future.
