Israel Arrests Foreign Journalist for Suspected Espionage Linked to Iran-Backed Media
Jeremy Loffredo, tied to an Iranian-funded website, accused of endangering Israeli security during wartime.
Israeli authorities have arrested Jeremy Loffredo, an American journalist with ties to an Iranian-funded media outlet, on suspicion of espionage. Loffredo, known for his reporting on "The Grayzone," was placed under house arrest after posting a video detailing Iranian missile strikes on Israel. His reporting raised concerns about revealing sensitive information during a time of war.
Loffredo, who describes himself as an independent investigative journalist, was apprehended near the Palestinian village of Burin while attempting to bypass an Israeli military checkpoint with a group of foreign activists. The group, “Looking the Occupation in the Eye,” is known for its opposition to Israel's presence in Judea and Samaria. Initially, soldiers believed Loffredo’s presence was linked to typical foreign anarchist activity, but the situation escalated when his connection to "The Grayzone" came to light.
The Grayzone, a controversial left-wing website funded in part by Iran, has been accused of spreading disinformation and pro-Iranian propaganda. In one particular report, Loffredo disclosed details of how close Iranian missiles came to hitting Israeli military and intelligence targets. He also described areas where Israeli forces were jamming GPS signals to thwart missile accuracy, admitting that his reporting violated Israel’s military censor regulations.
Israel’s Military Censor enforces strict guidelines on reporting missile strike locations to prevent enemies from adjusting their targeting strategies. Since the onset of the current conflict, triggered by Hamas’s October 7 attack, Iran and its proxies, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and other militant groups, have launched thousands of missiles, rockets, and drones at Israel. Revealing precise missile landing sites poses a grave security risk to the country.
“There is suspicion of serious offenses, involving espionage and aiding the enemy,” legal expert Yotam Eyal of The Legal Forum for Israel told The Press Service of Israel. “This individual was not merely interfering with military activities; he was actively documenting and publicizing sensitive information that could aid Israel’s enemies.”
Eyal emphasized Israel’s legal right to protect its citizens, particularly during wartime. “When someone uses their access to harm the country by supplying intelligence that could benefit the enemy, the state must take decisive action,” he added.
Loffredo’s arrest highlights the increasing concern over foreign journalists and activists with ties to hostile organizations. The Grayzone has been under scrutiny for its financial links to Iranian state-owned Press TV, which has paid its contributors thousands of dollars. The site’s founder, Max Blumenthal, has also appeared on Russian television and was a guest at the 10th anniversary of RT, Russia’s state-controlled news network.
Elchanan Gruner, an investigative journalist who has researched foreign anarchist activity in Israel, warned of the security risks posed by activists who often disguise their intentions under the guise of humanitarian beliefs. He noted an alarming rise in anarchist support for Hezbollah, pointing to foreign activists recorded at a pro-Hezbollah rally in Ramallah in September. Two German nationals arrested at the rally were later deported by Israeli authorities.
As the conflict between Israel and Iran-backed terror groups continues, the threat posed by foreign actors providing sensitive information to the enemy remains a significant concern. Israel's security services are taking no chances, particularly with individuals linked to organizations known for their hostile propaganda.
