US Military Deploys LUCAS Attack Drones in First Combat Use
As regional tensions escalate, the United States authorizes departures and advises citizens to consider leaving while flights remain available.

In a striking development on the modern battlefield, the United States military has deployed its new Low-cost Unmanned Combat Attack System (LUCAS) drones for the first time in combat operations.
According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the drones are being used as part of Operation Epic Fury also known as Operation Roaring Lion marking their operational debut since being unveiled in late 2025.
CENTCOM announced that Task Force Scorpion Strike has begun deploying the one-way attack drones in active combat. The move represents a significant shift in how the US military approaches cost-effective aerial strike capabilities in the Middle East.
“For the first time in history,” CENTCOM stated, “one-way attack drones are being used in combat during Operation Epic Fury. These low-cost drones, modeled after Iran’s Shahed drones, are now delivering American-made retribution.”
The LUCAS system was developed by SpektreWorks and is described as a reverse-engineered adaptation of the Iranian Shahed-136 platform. That drone has been widely used by Russia in Ukraine and by Iranian-backed militias throughout the region.
By developing a comparable system, the United States has signaled that it intends not only to counter drone threats, but to match them with scalable, affordable technology of its own.
The V-shaped LUCAS drones are designed for rapid production and low-cost deployment. Although technical specifications remain classified, CENTCOM confirmed that they can be launched through multiple methods, including catapults, rocket-assisted takeoff systems, and mobile vehicle-based platforms.
The drones are also capable of autonomous, long-range operations an increasingly vital capability in a region where distances are vast and threats are dynamic.
Task Force Scorpion Strike was established following a directive to accelerate the acquisition and deployment of inexpensive unmanned systems. Within months, CENTCOM formed a full squadron of LUCAS drones now based in the Middle East.
The initiative is part of a broader regional drone strategy that integrates land-based operations with maritime drone activity conducted by Task Force 59. Together, these units are reshaping the US military’s tactical posture in the region.
Admiral Brad Cooper, who led CENTCOM during the task force’s formation, emphasized the deterrent value of innovation.
“Equipping our skilled warfighters faster with cutting-edge drone capabilities showcases US military innovation and strength, which deters bad actors,” he said.
The debut of LUCAS reflects a new phase in drone warfare. What was once a tool primarily associated with Iran and its proxies is now being mirrored and countered by American manufacturing and operational doctrine.
For Israel and other US allies in the region, this development underscores Washington’s continued commitment to technological superiority and regional stability. The growing threat posed by Iranian drone capabilities has reshaped modern warfare, and cooperative defense innovation remains essential.
As unmanned systems increasingly define the future battlefield, the deployment of LUCAS drones signals that the United States and its partners are adapting swiftly.
In a volatile region where deterrence matters, innovation can be as powerful as firepower.
