U.S. Defense Secretary Confirms THAAD Missile System Deployed in Israel
Washington bolsters Israel's defense as the region braces for potential conflict with Iran.
The United States has deployed its advanced Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile system to Israel, bolstering the country's already robust anti-missile defenses amid rising tensions with Iran. Speaking to reporters, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed that the THAAD system is now “in place” in Israel, though he stopped short of confirming whether it was operational. He noted that the system could be activated quickly if needed.
The THAAD system, a key component of the U.S. military’s layered air defense network, is designed to intercept ballistic missiles at high altitudes. Its deployment, along with approximately 100 U.S. soldiers, follows Iran’s missile barrage against Israel on October 1, in which over 180 missiles were fired at Israeli targets. The move is part of the U.S. effort to help defend Israel as it weighs a potential military response to Iran.
President Joe Biden has expressed his support for Israel’s right to self-defense but has also cautioned against escalating the conflict. U.S. officials have urged Israel to carefully calibrate its response to avoid triggering a broader war in the Middle East. Biden has voiced concerns about any potential Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities or energy infrastructure, which could further destabilize the region.
Despite these warnings, Austin emphasized that the decision on how to respond remains Israel's to make. “At the end of the day, that’s an Israeli decision,” Austin said. He acknowledged the complexity of the situation, noting that Israel's assessment of what constitutes a proportional response might differ from Iran’s perception of the same.
While the U.S. is hoping to reduce tensions between Israel and Iran, the deployment of the THAAD system underscores Washington’s commitment to Israel's defense. Austin indicated that the U.S. is closely monitoring the situation and will continue efforts to de-escalate hostilities. "We're going to do everything we can to dial down the tensions," he added, though the path forward remains uncertain.
As the situation develops, Israel’s strategic decisions will be critical in determining the trajectory of this volatile standoff. The presence of the THAAD system adds a significant layer of protection for Israel as it navigates these challenging times.
