Israeli Talent Yaniv Bazini Aims to Take UVM Soccer to National Glory

Leading UVM’s historic run, Bazini proudly represents Israel and his Jewish identity.

Yaniv Bazini, a standout forward for the University of Vermont (UVM) soccer team, has emerged as one of the top scorers in college soccer this season. With 14 goals to his name, Bazini has been instrumental in leading UVM to its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division I College Cup Finals. But his journey goes far beyond the soccer field.

Born in Ness Ziona, Israel, Bazini’s determination to succeed reflects both his passion for the game and his commitment to being a proud representative of Israel. Just days after the October 7 attack on his homeland, which saw Hamas kill 1,200 people and take 250 hostages, Bazini scored a goal against Binghamton University. He celebrated by draping an Israeli flag over his back, a symbolic moment of strength and pride.

“When everything happened in Israel a year ago, I said, well, I won’t really help if I come back to Israel, but I can be the best ambassador,” Bazini explained. “To show people the real face [of Israel], not the one that they see in the social media.”

This season, Bazini has been a driving force for UVM. His 14 goals are a team high, and he has found the back of the net in six of UVM’s seven postseason matches, including a critical goal in the semifinal against Denver. His stellar performance earned him back-to-back America East All-Conference First Team honors and a place on the All-Tournament Team.

Bazini’s path to the United States was shaped by his love of soccer. After completing his military service, he moved to the U.S. to pursue his dreams, playing one season at North Carolina State before transferring to UVM in 2022. He quickly became a key player for the team and a beloved member of the Burlington community.

Although Burlington has seen challenges in recent years related to antisemitism and anti-Israel sentiments, Bazini has been pleasantly surprised by the strong support he’s received. “Before I came here, I said, well, I’m going to a kind of small place, so I know that most of the Jews are in the big cities. So I did not expect to have [this community], but such a great community,” he shared, crediting the local Chabad for fostering connection and support.

Bazini understands the power of representation. Whether it’s praying “Shema Yisrael” before each game or celebrating his goals with gratitude to God, he refuses to hide his identity. “It means everything,” he said. “I got so many messages of kids that are impacted… not only by my soccer, but how I show that I’m Jewish and not afraid of it.”

As UVM competes for a national title, Bazini’s focus remains on giving Israelis something to cheer for during difficult times. With the MLS player draft approaching, Bazini hopes to take his game to the professional stage. If drafted, he would join other Israeli players like Tai Baribo and Liel Abada in representing Israel in the MLS.

Yaniv Bazini’s story is one of perseverance, pride, and purpose. Whether on the field or off, he continues to inspire, proving that sports can serve as a powerful platform to unite, uplift, and celebrate identity.
