Zakaria Zubeidi to Be Released in Prisoner Exchange
Fatah leader’s release to Judea and Samaria comes as Israel secures freedom for hostages held by Hamas.
Zakaria Zubeidi, a prominent figure in the Fatah Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, is set to be released on Saturday as part of a prisoner exchange agreement for Israeli hostages held in Gaza, according to reports. His release coincides with a larger ceasefire arrangement involving the return of 33 Israeli captives over a 42-day period.
Zubeidi, once a leading commander in Jenin, was arrested in 2019 for involvement in terror-related activities, including shooting attacks. He is also notorious for his daring escape from Gilboa Prison in 2021, after which he was recaptured within five days. Despite his history, Zubeidi was not convicted of murder, enabling his return to Judea and Samaria rather than deportation abroad.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has made it clear that Zubeidi will remain under close surveillance. “Any involvement in terrorism or possession of weapons post-release will make him a target,” the IDF stated.
Zubeidi’s release comes as the IDF continues “Operation Iron Wall,” a focused campaign aimed at dismantling terror infrastructure in Jenin. The operation has included targeted air strikes and ground operations, with efforts to minimize civilian casualties.
Saturday’s exchange is set to include the release of four Israeli hostages, among them Arbel Yehud and three female soldiers who were kidnapped by Hamas during the October 7, 2023, attacks. In addition, for each Israeli soldier released, Israel has agreed to release 50 Palestinian prisoners, some of whom have been convicted of terrorism-related offenses.
The release of Zakaria Zubeidi, a symbolic figure in northern Samaria, is likely to spark significant reactions. His son, Mohammed Zubeidi, was killed in an Israeli drone strike in Tubas earlier this year, further intertwining the family with regional tensions.
As Israel works to secure its hostages while maintaining its defense against terror threats, the situation remains a delicate balance.
